Introduction
Arabica or Robusta? That is the question many coffee lovers ask themselves. These two species account for more than 95% of global production, but they are radically different in terms of taste, cultivation, and price. Here is a breakdown.
Coffea Arabica
Arabica (Coffea arabica) is the most widely grown species in the world (about 70% of production). It grows at high altitudes, between 600 and 2,000m, in regions with a temperate climate.
- Taste: smooth, complex, fruity, floral, or chocolaty notes
- Caffeine: 1.2 to 1.5%
- Acidity: higher, pleasant
- Origins: Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala, Brazil
- Ideal for: drip, pour-over, cold brew
Coffea Robusta
Robusta (Coffea canephora) is more resilient and is grown in lowlands, in humid tropical zones. Its name comes from its robustness against diseases.
- Taste: powerful, earthy, bitter, nutty notes
- Caffeine: 2.2 to 2.7% (almost double!)
- Acidity: low
- Origins: Vietnam, Uganda, Brazil, Indonesia
- Ideal for: Italian espresso, instant coffee, blends

Which one to choose?
It all depends on your tastes and your preparation method:
- You like a smooth and aromatic coffee using drip or cold brew → single-origin Arabica
- You want a powerful espresso with a nice crema → an Arabica/Robusta blend
- You are sensitive to caffeine → opt for Arabica
